Dr. José Herrera is the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Northern Iowa. As Provost he is responsible for the academic and organizational functioning of the campus and the advancement of high quality teaching and learning, scholarship, and service. He provides oversight for academic programs and leadership for faculty recruitment, development, and retention.
Before joining UNI, he was Mercy College’s Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs (since January 2017) and the founding Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Associate and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Western New Mexico University.
Dr. Herrera began his higher education career as a biology professor, and received his Ph.D. from Kansas State University and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in biological sciences from Northern Illinois University. An extensive author and lecturer on varying environmental sciences themes, his experience also includes researching and advising on the challenges and opportunities of first-generation college students and minority-serving institutions
