Faculty Percent of Time & Workload Expectations
Description
The percent of time (effort) for faculty and staff cannot exceed 100% during any term, including summer. For any term where additional work is requested above 100%, it must be counted and processed as Special Compensation and is subject to the limitations within policy 4.41 Special Compensation and Summer Appointments.
On the Period Activity Pay (PAP) In UNI Works, “Work hours per week” or “Work hours per activity period” is collected instead of percent of time (see below).

During the summer term, when offering and processing payment for various types of work for faculty, Managers, PAP Preparers, and HR Liaisons will need to utilize the Summer Work Declaration (SWD) form and already submitted PAPs and OTPs to determine what other work is occurring during the given term and that the percent of time is not exceeding policy limits in each term. Percent of time is collected on the SWD.
Determining Percent of Time for Faculty
Term | Length | Status | Workload Expectation | Equivalent % |
---|---|---|---|---|
Fall or Spring Semester | Full Semester | Tenure Tenure-Track Term | Three (3) - 3 credit hour courses | Per 3 credit = 25% NORMAL Teaching Load = 75% |
3 credit hour equivalent for scholarly & creative work and service. An additional course may be added to workload if department head determines individual is not research active | Scholarship/Service = 25% | |||
Term | Department heads will need to specify workload expectations. Most will teach four (4) 3 credit hour courses | 3 credit = 25% | ||
Temporary | Course increments | 1 credit = 1/12 (8.33%) | ||
Fall or Spring Semester | 6 Weeks | Temporary | Course increments | 1 credit = 22.2% |
8 Weeks | Temporary | Course increments | 1 credit = 16.66% | |
Summer Term | 4 Weeks | All | Course increments | 1 credit = 33.33% Single 4 credit (usually science courses with a lab) = 100% |
5 Weeks | All | Course increments | 1 credit = 26.66% | |
6 Weeks | All | Course increments | 1 credit = 22.50% | |
8 Weeks | All | Course increments | 1 credit = 16.66% | |
12 Weeks | All | Course increments | 1 credit = 11% Single 4 credit = 33% | |
Summer Term Research Fellowships (Faculty Handbook) | 4 Weeks | All | Summer Research Fellowships (Faculty Handbook) | 100% (if other sources are involved, contact Graduate College) |
8 Weeks | All | Summer Research Fellowships (Faculty Handbook) | 100% (if other sources are involved, contact Graduate College) | |
Summer Term | Research and Sponsored Programs - Research and Grants |
Summer Term (All) - 2025 Percentage of Time
Other summer awards not in the above table need to specify workload and percentage by dividing the total number of hours working on the assignment by the number of working hours in a month:
Month | Number of Working Days | Number of Summer Days | Hours in Month |
---|---|---|---|
May | 22 | 10 | 80 (10x8) |
June | 21 | 21 | 168 (21x8) |
July | 23 | 23 | 184 (23x8) |
August | 21 | 14 | 112 (14x8) |
For example, a faculty member is expected to work 4 hours per day for 5 days in the month of June. To calculate the percentage of time, divide 20 (4hrs x 5 days) by 168 hours (June hrs in month) = 11.9%.
